The Beauty of Asian Traditional Costumes

What are some widely known traditional dresses of Asia? The first thing that pops up into mind is Kimono?and Qipao (Cheong sam). Both of them can be said as two of the most representative dresses when one thinks of traditional dress of Asia. Nonetheless, it will be sad to just know those two. There are other kinds of dresses that represents the beauty and history of Asia. The first dress is Hanbok. Today, Korea is one of the emerging countries that spreads its popularity through music and food. However, Korea’s traditional dress, Hanbok, cannot be left out when representing the culture of Korea. The word Hanbok directly refers to “Korean clothe”. Hanbok is made with silk and shows off vibrant colors that is distinctive even from far away. Looking at Hanbok, it’s visible that the cuts and folds of Hanbok are very neat and clean. Even though everyone wore them in the ancient times, now days, they are only worn when there is a national holiday or celebration (wedding).

The beautiful of Asian traditional costumes

Second dress I will be introducing is Ao Dai. Ao Dai is a traditional dress of Vietnam. At first, Ao Dai did not represent any aesthetic means what so ever; however, as the time passed, it started to represent the beauty of Vietnam. This clothing consists of trousers worn under tightly tuned dress and represents the beauty of women and Vietnam. It is also tight around the waist allowing women to show off the waist line more visually. The third dress I will be informing is Cheongsam. Cheongsam or Qipao of China is probably one of the most known kind of Asian traditional dress. Qipao was implicitly made for women. Tightly tuned dress that covers from neck to knee (sometimes even to ankle) allows the legs to look more slender and long. The most common pattern that can be found is the flower. It represents the elegance and modesty of Chinese women. Qipao is also made to emphasize the neck and to make it look more slender.

Close to finish, the next dress I am about to present is commonly seen around the United States. It’s a dress that is worn by South Asians in everyday life called Saree. This dress is special in that it does not consist of several pieces of clothing. Saree is a long drape (around seven to nine yards) that is simply wrapped around a person’s body. Depending on the wearer, they can choose to make it simple and neat or fancy and colorful. Instead of showing off the feminine beauty of the body, the design on Saree represents the beauty itself.
Last dress I will present is Kimono. Standing alongside with Qipao, Kimono is second most known Asian traditional dress. They are not as tightly worn around the body compared to other dresses of Asia. Kimono is special in that the design and the colors of the dress represents who the wearer is. In ancient times, the colors represented the society class of that person. The garments also identified the family’s background. Unlike any other dresses of Asia, Kimono definitely has its own uniqueness and history embedded into it. Some of you may already be familiar with these traditional dresses of Asia, but not many of us do. Asia as a whole has its own beauty, but each countries have its own story and culture mixed into it, representing the different colors of Asia. And these traditional dresses of Asia definitely brings out those colors. So next time you visit any one of Asian countries, try wearing one of their traditional dresses and walk around the street. The people will appreciate you for the acknowledgement of their culture and bring pride and happiness to the people and to you.
